Squalane is defined as hair conditioner. These are ingredients used to create special effects on hair. This group includes materials which enhance the appearance and feel of hair, increase hair body or suppleness, facilitate styling, improve gloss or sheen and improve the texture of hair, including hair that has been damaged by chemical or physical action. These desirable effects are created by the use of lubricious and/or substantive ingredients that coat or adhere to the hair. In addition it acts as skin-conditioners - occlusive - cosmetic ingredients which retard the evaporation of water from the skin surface. By blocking the evaporative loss of water, occlusive materials increase the water content of skin. The effect on the skin can also be transferred to the scalp. Occlusive ingredients are generally lipids which tend to remain on the skin surface.
